Have you ever built a house? The name of the game?
Spend thousands of dollars, and just….
We spent two years looking for our forever home. Two years. There was never anything in our price range that had our must haves. So we raised our budget. Still nothing. And it’s not like our must haves were ridiculous:
Dining space (didn’t have to be formal, just dedicated)
3 bedrooms, preferably 4
Not a split level
That was it. Not too extreme, right? But in two years of looking, we just never found that place where we said “Yep. This is it.” which we totally felt when we bought this house. So we started to explore building. We found a neighborhood we loved, and once we decided to build, we had a solid plan in place and we moved quickly, picked our house plans, lot, structural options, and electrical (add outlets. Add SO MANY outlets)
Then… nothing. We waited six weeks and then we had our first design meeting. The design meeting is a 5 hour process, split into two meetings a week apart. We knocked all our options out in 2 hours. We’re decisive. We went back a week later and finalized our choices, changed two (sink and faucet) and then we waited. Again.
To entertain myself during this time, I would drive past the lot we’d chosen, just in case anything was getting done.

As you can see, nothing was happening. And nothing is happening. I know, I know, things are happening, permits are being pulled by the city, the architectural review committee (that’s a thing) is reviewing and approving all our choices, etc, but it sure feels like nothing is happening!
We are reaching the end of our wait time, and hopefully will break ground by the end of the month. Everyone tells me it will move fast once that happens, so cross your fingers.
There you have it. A quick chapter one in our house-building saga.
