well, this is embarassing

I got a bug up my butt on Sunday. (Where does that phrase come from anyway?) We actually accomplished several things. N's parents stopped by for some chat on their way home from a concert, I got to Target for some baskets and bookshelves before they got here. Once they left, we decided the only thing we were going to commit to getting done was patching the last patch of floor in the bathroom shower.

Shortly after we made these "plans" N went for a haircut and the dogs and I curled up for a nap in the guestroom. (Seriously, the guestroom bed is more comfortable than our bed. If you ever need a place to stay, I highly recommend Hotel H. Pets welcome.)

When N returned, we all got up and headed to the basement to lay the last 8 tiles on the shower floor. I don't know why we put it off for so long because it was ridiculously easy and not at all time-consuming.

After that, I felt inspired. I recently discovered I Heart Organizing, and I don't know why I hadn't heard of it before. I love it. While it seems to be heavily slanted towards organizing children, and she loves her Expedits (multiple) more than I can ever imagine (I mean, I love mine, but one is enough) wait, scratch that, I do have two Expedits. I guess I'm just as nerdy as she is :)

On my trip to Target this morning, I was going to get some baskets for our new living room bench (coming soon, I swear) and I saw some inexpensive dvd baskets. Knowing these would fit perfectly in our bathroom closet, I picked up a couple.

Now, our house was built in 1950. Our main bathroom is tiny. We have absolutely zero counter space. An apron sink juts out into the room and offers a little bit of undersink storage, but that's it. So mornings are a joy in our house, especially since we're currently sharing a bathroom.

Also, I got tired of seeing this in the mornings:
This is where it gets embarrassing. Seriously. It's also slightly indicative of just how small our bathroom is. I had to stand in the bathtub and take this photo at an angle. And the result? Embarrassment. Gross.

So I emptied it out.
Muuuuch better. I washed down the shelves and brought every.single.thing. out to the dining table.

Everything but the sweatshirt came out of the closet. The sweatshirt was already there. Everything else though? Was in the bathroom closet. Even the hat and composition notebook.

I sat down with my baskets to my side and sorted through everything. I had six baskets available to me and so I came up with six categories: D's morning things, N's morning things, extras, travel, medications, and first aid. I sorted, and sorted, and sorted. I filled the living room garbage can twice. I sorted some more.

I carted everything into the bathroom and put it aaaaaall away. It still didn't look quite right though, so I googled "cute label templates" and printed off some cute circles from here. I taped them to some cardstock for stability and attached them to the baskets with heavy-duty double sided tape I had laying around.

This is what I was left with:
This way, we can each grab our basket in the morning, set it on the back of the toilet and put it away when we're ready. Hopefully, this will keep the back of the toilet fairly clean from now on. Yoshi is making a cameo appearance here. He's currently obsessed with the bathroom.
 Close up of the labels.
 Travel and First Aid
 Our individual baskets
One other thing I did was this. I had a huge bag of cotton balls and a big ole box of q-tips and they never got used because they were buried in the back of the closet. This shelf is the only shelf in our bathroom, and it's too high to use for anything decorative, so I grabbed two vases from our wedding. (yes, our wedding, I still have vases from it) and loaded them up. I like the way they look, and they're fairly useful.

So that's how I spent my Sunday afternoon. Sifting through the detritus that gathered in our bathroom closet in a short year and a half.

What do you think? I'm super proud.

Total time: 1 hour
Total cost: $15.98 (for the two white baskets)

  1. Nice! It looks really great. I have a linen closet that I really need to organize too. I can't imagine what kind of strange stuff has probably made it's way in there!
